anything treasured is driven by the story it tells. Here's ours.

Sara Michael Halldorson

Ever since Sara was young she's loved hats and the outdoors. Her love of nature stems from backpacking with her father, Jeff Michael, in the Pacific Northwest and her love of hats from the childhood icons that embodied life in the rugged wilderness like Davy Crockett.

Once she met her travel-enthusiast wife, Beth Halldorson, who also shared her love of  the wild, they embarked on  countless adventures, many that led to the western heartlands.  In Aspen, Colorado they visited one of Beth's best friends, Matt Malone, who worked at Kemosabe, a high-end western wear and custom hat shop, and Sara purchased her first western hat. A few years later they travelled to Yellowstone and the Tetons with a stop in Jacksonhole, Wyoming where Sara discovered another custom hat business called Encounter, and she became enamoured with the process and experience.  As chance would have it, Beth and Sara were invited to Phoenix, Arizona for a friend's birthday where one of the activities was a "design your own hat" bar. Sara immediately took to assisting the ladies in accessorizing and personalizing their own hats.

Once back in Memphis, her love affair with western hats enflamed and her desire to learn and create her own hats blossomed. So she started researching and absorbing everything she could about the haberdashing process. After retooling some hats she already owned and then taking the leap to start a few of her own, suddenly people everywhere she went were asking about her hats. When she would convey that she made them herself,  people were fascinated and wanted their own. So, she started taking commissions.  So, after a little  brainstorming with  her very creative friends, Smoke and Mirrors Hat Co. was born.

Sara's vision for the hats she creates is that they can be a personalized heirloom to be passed down to family members for generations not just an accessory you can only wear on certain occasions.

Customizing a hat that fits not just your head but your whole personality changes the way you might have felt about hats in the past. They don't have to be a special occasion accessory. Once you have a hat that feels like it's an extension of yourself, you'll find yourself having to not wear it all the time.

We invite you to join us for a one-of-a-kind experience that results in a beautiful, wearable, work of art, that comes from the heart.

Welcome to Smoke and Mirrors Hat Company.

Pleasure to make your acquaintance... and hopefully, your hat.
